BELGRADE -- Thursday – The Bajrakli mosque in central Belgrade has suffered
extensive damage after it was set ablaze late last night by rioters.
Around 100 protestors broke through a police cordon, breaking windows in the
Mosque complex before setting it on fire. Ten police officers were injured,
three seriously.
Fire-fighters arrived at around 1.30am and extinguished the flames. Police
reinforcements managed to clear the area of demonstrators.
On the other side of town, police fired teargas and stun grenades to disperse
demonstrators outside the US embassy.
By 3.30am, Belgrade medical teams had treated 17 police officers and 11
protestors. At least five photographers and one journalist were injured in the
violence.
Unrest was reported in other parts of Serbia, most notably Novi Sad and Nis,
where another mosque was set on fire.
